ABOUT US
- The Jeffreys Bay Tecoma Craft Market first saw the light of day on the morning of Saturday 28 July, when some 40 highly talented hobbyists and crafters set up their colourful gazebos on the well-grassed field at the corner of Da Gama Road and Tecoma Street and commenced selling their wares to an eager public. Now, in its 16th year of existence, the market is still going strong, although the number of stallholders has remained more or less constant, fluctuating within a narrow range as members depart and new ones join.
- What sets this market apart from others is the strict ruling that all merchandise offered for sale must be the product of the stallholder's own labours and talent. The likelihood of participants having to compete with businesses purveying their factory-made wares, so often bearing the inevitable "Made in China" label, is thus eliminated
- Quality of workmanship is a non-negotiable and strictly monitored requirement. Before a new member is admitted to the fold, he or she is asked to present a sampling of their work for inspection by an accreditation committee. By implementation of this procedure, customers can be sure that their purchases will be marked by a high degree of quality and uniqueness.
- The market is held regularly on the first Saturday of every month, with further events organised sporadically through the year in order to take advantage of public and school holidays, and long weekends. Watch the local press for news about such "extra" events. Trading begins officially at 09:00 and runs until 13:00.
SERVICES
- At your service at the Tecoma Craft Market will be anything up to 40-or-so stallholders, all of them eager to show you their lovingly hand-crafted wares. These will include truly beautiful paintings by some of the Eastern Cape's most talented artists, wood- and leatherwork, knitted wear, stitchery, jewellery, toys and puzzles, household and personal ornamentation, as well as foodstuffs like home-baked rusks and biscuits, a wide variety of classic cheeses, inlaid jams and chutneys and 2-litre bottles of ginger beer of the kind that will put your taste buds in mind of grandma's culinary wizardry so many years ago.
- Then there is the popular refreshment tent, run as a fundraising project on a turn-by-turn basis by various churches, charities and bona fide service clubs. Here you will have the choice of pancakes, fresh-from-the-skottel wors rolls, egg and bacon rolls, jaffles, cake and milk tart slices, all washed down by a cup of tea, coffee or the soft drink of your choice. Tables, chairs and umbrellas are provided, enabling you to enjoy the fare of your choice in the virtual lap of luxury.
- Parking presents no problem, with wide pavements on either side of Da Gama Road.
